New Site, Another Go

It's been a long time since I've had a website of any kind. Mostly because I hate paying for things that I'm not using... And it just takes time to write. Time has been my most valuable resource ever since having kids. Seems like there's never enough time to go around - even when writing this, at nearly 11:30 at night, my wife is asking me to stop and to to to sleep because she has a hard time sleeping unless I'm on her schedule. You see? Time. It's very difficult to find any of it particularly when you're constrained to everyone else's schedule.

Ive been getting into self-hosting a lot of services recently (PiHole, Plex, Proxmox, etc), and it's for the most part, been a nice little outlet for me. You see, I enjoy "making things work" - it doesn't necessarily have to be a set-up that I would realistically ever use except in some very, ultra-specific use case, but the fact that I have set something up, that it works, and would be a viable solution in said "very, ultra-specific use case", just makes me feel satisfied. Perhaps it has something to do with our desire as humans to create (a dicing characteristic, if you ask me), or maybe it's because I'm learning something new, but no matter why that's the case, it is true... I just really enjoy it.

So this is my new attempt at a new website. It's nothing particularly special in the way of the design (I grabbed a pre-existing Ghost template, just like you would with most other website hosting companies), except that other than the purchase of an inexpensive mini PC and a little late night tinkering, everything (except the electricity and ISP bill) is free. Probably saves me somewhere in the range of $150 - $500 per year to just do this on my own. Of course, there is a higher likelihood of there being website downtime, BUT I don't necessarily anticipate there being much website traffic beyond myself and the occasional hacker who's determined to be sorely disappointed to find that not only do I not have any information that could be valuable, I also don't have any money for them to steal (sorry hackers... I'm broke... You'd be better off doing a telemarketing scam).

This is where we're at though - the beginning. And as Julie Andrews would say, "...a very good place to start."
